Mach Wave Elimination in Supersonic Jets
نویسنده
چکیده
Experimental results are presented on a method that eliminatesMach waves from the exhaust of supersonic jets and, hence, that removes a strong component of supersonic jet noise. Eliminationis achievedby surrounding the jet with an annular stream at prescribed velocity and temperature so that all turbulent motions become intrinsically subsonic. No mechanical suppressors are used. Implementation of the technique in a typical turbofan engine is estimated to increase takeoff thrust with minimal impact on overall fuel consumption.

Noise Measurements in Supersonic Jets Treated with the Mach Wave Elimination Method
We report noise measurements for perfectly expanded coaxial jets composed of a supersonic primary stream at velocity of 920 m/s and a co ow stream at conditions designed to prevent formation of Mach waves. Both the primary and secondary streams consisted of helium–air mixtures to simulate approximately the conditions of hot ows. The resulting sound eld was compared to that emitted by a sin...
متن کاملModelling of Suddenly Expanded Flow Process in Supersonic Mach Regime using Design of Experiments and Response Surface Methodology
The present work is an attempt to model, analyze, and control the flow at the base of an abruptly expanded circular duct by using design of experiments (DOE) and response surface methodology (RSM). Tiny-jets in the form of orifice were positioned at an interval of 900, 6.5 mm from the primary axis of the main jet of the nozzle. Experiments were conducted to measure two responses namely, base pr...

The shape of the nozzle geometry is increasingly attractive in heating, ventilation and air conditioning applications. The objective of the present work is to simulate and understand Supersonic flows with twin free jet Flow at various Mach numbers. The purpose is to precisely unders...
متن کاملNoise from Imperfectly Expanded Supersonic Coaxial Jets
Experiments have characterized the acoustics of axisymmetric high-speed jets at a variety of Mach numbers and velocities and at pressure-matched, overexpanded, and underexpanded conditions. The effect of an annular secondary ow on noise emission was also investigated. The fully expanded jet velocity ranged from 630 to 920m/s and the fully expanded jet Mach number ranged from 1.27 to 1.75.The s...
متن کاملControl of Nozzle Flow Using Microjets at Supersonic Mach Regime
This article reports the active control of base flows using the experimental procedure. Active control of base pressure helps in reducing the base drag in aerodynamic devices having suddenly expanded flows. Active control in the form of microjets having 0.5 mm radius placed at forty-five degrees apart is employed to control the base pressure. The Mach numbers of the present analysis are 1.7, 2....
